GAP Featured on CBS News Philadelphia

We are proud to share that Grands As Parents, Inc. (GAP) was recently featured in a CBS News Philadelphia story by Wakisha Bailey, highlighting the vital work our organization does for grandfamilies across the city.

Nearly 30% of Philadelphia grandparents serve as guardians for their grandchildren, often stepping in due to parental struggles with addiction or other challenges. Since our founding in 1996, GAP has been there to make sure no grandparent has to face this journey alone.

The story features longtime GAP members Joan Hughes and Juanita Cox, friends for over 50 years who have been part of the GAP family for 30 years. Juanita adopted two grandsons after their parents struggled with addiction, a story that resonates with so many of our members.

As Marcia Abdul-Malik shared in the piece, many grandparents face significant financial hardships while raising grandchildren on fixed incomes. GAP provides food, clothing, housing support, legal resources, and — most importantly — a community of people who understand.

"I had low income and I had to quit my job to take care of these babies."
